Friends of Gathland State Park Inc
About us
The Friends of Gathland State Park Inc is a Maryland
Non-profit Organization. Our purpose is to assist the Maryland Dept.
of Natural Resources with Gathland State Park. This assistance includes
among other things, the upkeep of the grounds, and more importantly protecting
and obtaining historically valuable artifacts. We provide volunteer
docents to keep the parks museum open from April-October. We also
serve to promote the use of the park by scheduling special events.
About Gathland State Park
Gathland State Park is located in Western Maryland on
the Frederick and Washington County lines. The park is about an hours
drive from Washington DC. The park is historically important.
Named after George Alfred Townsend who built a residence here in the late
1800's, the park contains the only memorial to Civil War Correspondents
in the world. The park is also the site of the Battle of South Mountain,
a Civil War battle preceding the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, Antietam,
located a few miles west in Sharpsburg.
