Happenings

Cigar sales have been brisk especially over the holidays.
F.O.G. wishes to thank the Frederick Magazine for featuring the cigars as their 'Hot Pick' and to Trout Liquor for carrying them. And our hats off to all those who are supporting out efforts by selling or buying these fine cigars.  They are available by calling Marge Magruder, visiting the museum, or the F.O.G. web site @ www.gathland.org

Upcoming Events
Museums by Candlelight attracted about 100 visitors for an afternoon of fellowship and Christmas cheer.  A beautifully decorated Victorian Christmas tree graced the Hall and a warm fire was inviting to all who came.  The Arch was bathed in the soft lights of over 200 luminaries.  Children had a good time making decorations and all guests enjoyed mulled cider and Christmas sweets.  The number of visitors was up from the previous year. Our thanks to all the members who decorated the Hall, baked the treats and set out the lights.

March 18 -- Membership meeting at 10 AM in Gapland Hall.  After a short business meeting, Dean Herrin from the Catoctin Center for Regional Studies will speak to members on the role of the Center and also on the tri-county Civil War Heritage area.  Meetings are open to the public.  As there are only two scheduled membership meetings this year, we hope local all members will attend.

April 1st and 2nd - The museum season opens with the Frederick Historic Sites Consortium's Museum Discovery Weekend  with a theme of  "Tellebrating History".  The Townsend and Civil War displays will be back in the renovated Lodge. The tentative schedule is as follows: Sat. and Sun. @ 12:30 a walking tour of 'Gapland' estate and talk on the Battle of South Mountain; Sat. @ 2 p.m., a short Civil War play entitled "A House Divided," presented by a group from Delaware;  Sun. @ 2 p.m., a reading of letters from 'Gath' to his wife Bessie.  The Parks 2000 trailer will be at the park on both days with information about the Maryland State Park System. There will be a $5.00 fee (children under 12 free) which entitles the person to visit any of the other 15 participating sites.
