weekend.  But the people that came enjoyed the intimacy of a small setting and the ability to get 'up close and personal' with the historians.  Our thanks to all the groups that participated.  FOG members Darce Easton, Anne Long and Rosalie Campbell served a delicious dinner to the historians Saturday evening.

At the Battle of South Mountain Reenactment in Boonsboro on Sept 23/24, FOG had a booth and sponsored a cigar and brandy evening for the reenactors.  Unfortunately, the "Gath" cigars did not arrive in time, but Dan Spedden  was able to purchase regular cigars to accompany the brandy. Staff at Greenbrier built a rustic booth for us. We thank them, as well as Dan and Jeanette Spedden, Bruce Reeder, Phil Chaney, Al Preston, Tim McCown and Marge Magruder for staffing the booth.

and presentation of certificates to The Friends of Gathland, the Central Maryland Heritage League and the South Mountain Heritage Society.  The designation of a monthly Maryland 'treasure' is part of the Commission's historic preservation program.  Delegate Louise Snodgrass said that "of all states involved in the Civil War, Maryland has far more protected land than any other state." 

Nov 20 -- Membership meeting at 10 AM in Gapland Hall.  This is the last meeting until the spring so please try and attend.  Special update on Battlefield Park plan.  We need your input!

December 4 -- Antietam Illumination
- FOG members will again help set out luminaries in the morning for the annual Illumination.  Those interested can contact Al Preston.  A short ceremony will be held at 4:15 PM and the road for the Illumination will open at 6 PM.

Middletown Heritage Days and Boonsboro Railroad Days were  successful.  Thanks to Joe Motter, Darce Easton, Sharon Schroebel, Dottie and Chuck Wierer, Cecile Buker and Marge Magruder for representing FOG, spreading the word about the park and recruiting several new members.

The ramp at the Hall is complete
and looks wonderful.  This will make the first floor of the Hall completely handicapped accessible.  FOG wishes to thank the Maryland Historical Trust's Museum Assistance Program for the grant, as well as the Seneca Valley Sugarloafers Volksmarch Club for a sizable contribution towards this project.   

South Mountain Battlefield chosen as Treasure of the Month  On September 21st, Maryland State Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and staff of the Maryland Commission for Celebrate 2000  were at the park for a ceremony


December 11, 2 to 8 PM -- Museums by Candlelight at Gapland Hall.  Start the holiday season with refreshments, music and good fellowship at Gapland
