for battlefield visitors; 9) Increase the operating budget by $500,000
annually; 10) Provide $733,000 in capitol improvement funds over three
years; 11) Create a permanent committee similar to the Task Force to advise
DNR on matters relating to the implementation of the report. The
Frederick & Washington County Delegations have submitted House Bill
1138 to establish the battlefield.
I believe
it is important that the Governor hear from individuals and groups that
support the battlefield concept. Those of you who live in the area
have seen new construction near the battlefield. Not only is
protection of the land imperative, but the memory of the Union and Confederate
troops who fought and died on the mountain should be honored in a very

and evaluating the potential costs, benefits and feasibility of establishing
a State Battlefield on South Mountain. Subcommittees addressed the
issues of funding, real property rights and needs, and management procedures.

New
Acquisition - The Friends have just purchased
a letter written by George
Alfred Townsend, dated May
23, 1895. The letter was written a Dr. Chaney and was asking about
Reverend B. Booth and where he lived. F.O.G. member John Frye, who
operates the Maryland Room at the Washington County Library says that Rev.
Booth, who lived at Delemere in Wash. Co., was a teacher as well as an
Episcopal minister, and taught Benedict Arnold's children during the Revolutionary
War. The letter will be on display in the museum.
