was over.  Soldiers will be standing guard on their picket post, doctors will be tending the wounded and soldiers will be writing letters home describing the battle.  Over 50 reenactors will be enlisted to help with the scenes.  Chris Anders and the "Liberty Rifles" will be holding down most of these positions with some help from other groups as the need arises.  Tour guides will take the spectators through the various scenes using lanterns to give the visitors the feeling that they are there on the night after the battle.
Guides and docents are needed anyone interested contact Marge at (301) 371-6923.

Civil War Living History Weekend at the Park - Saturday and Sunday, September 9 and 10 from 10 am to 3 pm. The Friends and South Mountain Recreation Area will again be hosting the Union and Confederate Historians at the park.  It is a great way for families to get "up close and personal" with the historians and learn a little something while they are at it.  The Friends will be providing dinner for the Historians on Saturday night.

South Mountain Reenactment in Boonsboro   The Friends will be participating at the reenactment again this year with the Cigar and Brandy night as well as a booth and the art raffle.  Anyone who wants to help man the booth can call Marge Magruder @ (301) 371-6923.  And this year we have the cigars!!!

Volunteers at the Park
On June 21,  a group of 23 teens from the United Methodist Church in Middletown volunteered at the park. They replaced the fence around the barn, weeded the beds at the Hall, spread mulch, and regraded the brick walk.  Staff from Greenbrier used a bulldozer to clear some of the "steps" below the Arch and the volunteers raked, spread seed and then hay.  We extend our thanks to this group of energetic young people for volunteering part of their summer vacation to help us.

Dorothy Rasmussen, Townsend's great-grand-daughter, visited Gathland in late April.  She stayed with Marge and Duke Magruder, who hosted a small party for her while she was here.  She was very impressed with the improvements that the Friends have made at the park since she was here for the  Centennial of the Arch in 1996.  She also brought some photos of the estate, Townsend and relatives that are not in the FOG collection and was kind enough to leave them so that they can be copied.  Our thanks to Dan Patrell of Diversion Publications who will be scan the photos and put them on CD's.

Art Raffle  The art raffle we had last year was so successful, we decided to repeat it!  This year we have a beautifully framed print of Mort Kuntzler's Sharpsburg War Council.

Saturday, August 19th, Civil War Candlelight Tour  This summer will see a first for Gathland State Park in the form of a guided candlelight tour on August 19th, from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The tour will be $2.00 per person for those 12 and above, funds generated will go towards the interpretation of the new state battlefield. The museum will be open during the event.
The tour will feature six vignettes depicting scenes from the area after the battle the evening of September 14, 1862.  There will also be a lecture at the shelter to give an overall view of the Battle of South Mountain and it's role in the Maryland Campaign.
The scenes will depict actions that would typically be seen around the gap after the fighting
